Inspired by the words of W.E.B. DuBois, the Talented Tenth High School Tour was created to identify and train non-traditional leaders in underserved and underrepresented communities. The goal of this 10-city tour is to enlighten, encourage and empower young people to develop the skills needed to become powerful leaders in their school, community and the world.
This year more than 500 students and 100 teachers, counselor and administrators participated in this highly motivational lecture series.
Tavis Smiley offered his perspective on youth leadership and challenged the students to find their voice and vocation as they look to the future.
In partnership with the ExxonMobil Foundation, the tour also highlighted the importance of youth considering careers in and/or becoming proficient in science, technology, engineering and math. African Americans are currently underrepresented in these areas which will provide the jobs of the future. At each stop a representative from ExxonMobil presented career information on the STEM areas.

The participating schools included: Anacostia High School (Washington, D.C.), Hampton High School (Hampton, Va.), Beaumont High School (St. Louis), Austin Community High School (Chicago), Callaway High School (Jackson, MS), Crenshaw High School (Los Angeles), Benjamin Banneker Academy (Brooklyn, NY), Frederick Douglass High School (Atlanta) and Booker T. Washington High School (Houston).
Students received a commemorative tour T-shirt, a calculator and pen set, product samples courtesy of Neutrogena, information on banking courtesy of Wells Fargo, and a DVD of the television show, “A Different World,” courtesy of UrbanWorks.
In addition the students received the Youth to Leaders Guidebook, a resource publication of the Tavis Smiley Foundation and The Scholarship and HBCU Guide for African-American Students, a comprehensive guide to help students apply for scholarships and research the nation's historically black colleges and universities.
